Default '06 Wideglide still runs rough..

Dealer has had it twice. Said loose spark plug wire last time (bull). The bike runs like it's running out of gas, but it's intermittent. does it more when it's cold. But also when warmed up. sometimes starts after going over a bump. Not bad gas. After it gets really warmed up (hot) it seems to be o.k. Starts fine, idles fine. Mostly at low to med. rpm when cruising.
Will accelerate, but once in awhle cough and slight backfire when letting off throttle. some days runs fine, like when the dealer had it. go figure.

Any ideas?

Check the battery ground (make sure it makes contact with bare metal) and all wires to/from the battery for tightness.

Thanks guys. Yeah it's stock. Got about 9k miles. Was running cold REALLY bad and had the 8 degree injectors swapped for the 20 and a remap of some sort and then it ran great for quite awhile. When I came back from Laughlin, it started missing/cutting out again, but not nearly as bad and not only when cold. The dealer followed some "list" last time I took it in for this (two weeks ago). They used the digital analyize and ruled out all the sensors. I don't think they did much more than that except to say "oh, a spark plug cable was loose" ....NOT!! First thing I checked, and the spark plugs. The problem is it's intermittent, so if it doesn't act up when they test drive it thenthe problemdoesn't exist in their eyes. Sounds like some kind of loose wire somewhere. Oh, when I bought the bike used in December the trip odometer didn't work. HD said that the factory forgot to attach the wire! Great quality control! Makes me wonder what other wires they didn't tighten or attach!

Marcss,

I've had the same exact problem with my 20006 Wide Glide. After I've gotten to know the service writers pretty well, i.e. more than a few repeated trips, they FINALLY found the problem- a mostly open ground in the rear Fuel-Injector. More than likely this solves all of the problems, but as with everything in life, "We shall see."

I also asked the service write to bounce repeatedly on the seat as he test rode it. This was to see if the weight on the seat tugs the Ground Wire from the frame. This isn't common, but certainly not "unheard of".

I hope this helps...

I told them that others think this is some kind of short or wiring problem. When they did the 10k it ran fine for them, so they did nothing. I guess the problem doesn't exist unless it happens when they have it. They don't want to spend a lot of time on it when they can't charge for it (warranty). So after the 10k I went on a long trip over the weekend and it ran good, except for just a little lite missing at cruising speed once or twice. I don't think they will take the time to check all the wiring. They did do a test that shows electrical shorts but said it was negative

Thanks for replying!

marcss,

My 06 WG is doing sort of the same thing. Mine starts missing when someone gets on the passenger pillion. It must be a loose wire somewhere. Going to get it into the stealer at some point soon, to see what the problem is. My be my PC getting pinched under the seat with all of the wiring tucked in around that area.
