I guess the bottom line is, if you go with the 117 kit, do yourself a favor and install an oil cooler. Just like the Harley engineers intended to.

I'm surprised you overheated while riding on an 80 degree day. I've rode way hotter and only noticed overheating when stuck in prolonged stop and go traffic.

I was riding in stop and go traffic, had my wife on back. Like I said, 80ish degrees. The traffic was probably 15-20 minutes of stop in go in Elgin IL. Bike had approximately 900 miles on it at the time. Completely stock, running good 93 octane fuel.

Yea I plan on installing both an oil cooler (I'd like to fabricate a bracket so it's fan assisted) and cooling fan setup. I hope that's enough

It will be enough, as long as your get an oil cooler, get rid of the catalytic converter and get it professionally dyno tuned. Those three things will have your bike running very healthy for years to come.

Well I will get an oil cooler, and I don't think my d&d fat cat has a Catalyc converter but I was just planning on running the autotune setup (not basic) from Powervision with the wide and o2 sensors. At least for a while. MAYBE a dyno tune closer to summer.

Oil coolers are a good idea on any Harley big twin, this is my Jagg 10 row cooler (Sertrab), the jagg filter adapter allows you to run the longer P/N filter and miss the crank position sensor. The cooler and larger oil filter (WIX P/N 51214 or Donaldson P/N P550400 or K&N P/N 173B) adds a bit more than a pint to the total oil capacity of the engine
