Not sure how much you know about motor work but it'd be foolish to take it apart to do the bottom end and not do the top until a few months from now. Wait until you have the money and do it all at once.

Don't know much about bottom end upgrades, I've been a tech for a Chrysler dealer for the past few years but this will be my first Harley "build". I can handle the 117 install 100%, however I've never dug in to a V twin bottom end before, and to be honest I'm not educated on exactly what has to be "beefed up" besides what's in the primary.

Thank you to all who have replied. I hate asking these kind of questions cause I feel like a customer when they bring their car in and try to describe an issue and sound stupid. I am more than capable of doing the 117 build and upgrading the primary components (sorry if that sounds cocky or arrogant). However I am very uneducated on modifying the bottom end. I don't know what options are available or necessary as far as crank work or bearings etc.

This ^

It better to overbuild - then under utilize - that's how longevity derived

And it not an either..., or solution - it the complete package working in concert

Alright so I called dark horse (thank you for that by the way) and they told me they wouldn't actually weld the crank, he said they would simply check the runout and balance it. This doesn't make sense to me because everyone who is educated on performance builds is telling me that I HAVE TO have the crank welded for my se 117 build. Can anyone chin in on this? Would I be better off just buying a better crankshaft? If so any suggestions? Thanks for all the info. This will be my first build and I really don't want to **** up a perfectly reliable bike. I'm not lookin for crazy numbers (maybe 120-130 hp/tq). Thank you

X2. Had DH do mine last winter in February.

Another option is going to S&S for a crank.
