Default Front End Clunk

Have had my SG for over 10 years now and the front end has always (or at least usually) made a "clunk" when going over larger bumps or holes. However, it seems to be getting worse and is bothering me lots. I read a few years ago that changing the washer on the top fork bolt would help. I did change the washer, and much to my amazement, it seemed to help, at least for a while. Bad as ever now though. Anyone with a similar experience? Going to have to rip into that scoot's front end or go nuts. Thanks.

Tighten both the front fuel tank bolt and the rear fuel tank bolt.

+1 Yes, definitely check the fuel tank bolts first. I had the clunk and just about tore the front half off the bike looking for it's source. I swore it was coming from the forks somewhere...

But, just like OldEnuf2NoBtr says, it was the tank bolts. Super-simple to fix.

It's very commonly the culprit, judging from responses on similar threads.

If it comes loose again, put a drop of blue loctite or use nyloc nuts.

Thanks for the tank bolt suggestion. I also remember that from a while back and forgot all about it. Will try that first and sure will be nice if that is the problem.

I have the same issue on my 2002 FXDWG3. I hear a clunk when I hit certain bumps. I just had my tank off to flush it and bolts are tight. Any other suggestions as to what to look for?

Is it on compression or rebound?

Default maybe pre-load

I recently lowered my '03 FXDWG. Before, there was no clunk. After, there was a bunch. Changed the washer out, no help. Increased the pre-load to about 3/4" longer than the instructions in 1/4" steps. Still have good movement and no noise.

My 2009 Street Bob had the clunk also. It was the fuel tank bolt.

Could it be your motor mount? I had a clunk going over bumps on my last Dyna, turned out to be a worn front motor mount. Actually thinking I may have the same issue with my new Dyna...dangit!
