Maybe it's your own hearing that's going away. It's been my experience that as the pipes get older they will get inherently louder due to the loss of packing materials around the baffles and by the baffles themselves breaking down and rusting out over time.

True. I also would suspect some hearing loss. Long exposure to 85 db is enough to cause some. I suppose a decrease in compression could also be to blame. Maybe check rings and valve train.

Did your Exhaust Moderfier test the db level of your pipes, and if so what is the reading?
If he's an expert he should be able to figure out the problem, but if he can't at least you'll know how the sound level compares.
