Default Oil Change Question

Changed the oil for the first time on my Dyna and I was only able to get 2 1/2 quarts of oil back into the motor and the stick showed full. I changed the oil while the bike was up on my jack and the bike was level. Now I'm wondering if I should have changed the oil while it was on the ground and on the kick stand. Would this have allowed more of the old oil to come out?

Thanks for any advise as this is the first time I have changed the oil.

Other then just the 2 1/2 half qts. going back it every thing else went ok with no leaks. Just made a mess getting the filter off. I used the filter funnel that HD sells and it didn't work that well. I took the filter off first and that may have been a mistake.

Yep, it needs to be on the side stand for an accurate dipstick reading. Top it up then run for a few minutes, check the stick again.

Btw next time drain oil first then remove filter. Put a little oil on the rubber ring seal with your finger before installing the new one.

It's all good.

2.5 is right.

I use a little synthetic grease on the oil filter for easy removal.
You have to tip the thing upside down to drain it all. . Your good.
I have an oil cooler and undue the lines and still can't fit 3 quarts in.
I use a punch and make two holes top and bottom on the filter and it will help drain easy without the mess.

It's a dry sump system, so there is always about 1/2 qt stuck in the crank case that you can't get out. The oil we change is only what's in the tank and filter, so 2-1/2 is perfect.

It showed full when the bike was level because the oil sloshed towards the dip stick on the right. Once it leans on the stand, it will slosh back left and the level will show lower.

l've just done mine on my 014 Low rider and l still put the same in it as my 07 Super glide, 3 quarts. l don't know what's changed between them other than the displacement increase in the engine but it all goes in and l've never had it blow out anywhere either.

My manual specifies drain and fill on the jiffy.
