Usually you can go up about 2" without cable changes if you're lucky.Up and back will usually get you a bit more without changes. There's all sorts of risers available, straight , curved so that problem can be dealt with if you find the proper risers

I used 4" risers that I got from dennis kirk. and mounted the speedo and tach to the top of the headight using 1/4" pipe nipples with no changes to any of the cables. Risers nipple & bolts cost $49 total

Actually, I'm too lazy to figure out how to post a picture here, but I have a gallery set up at "the zone" that you can check out. I used to be an active member there, but some stuff happened that turned me and many others off. I kept my gallery there for this reason though.
go to harleyzone.com

I'm in there somewhere. Look for grimm. I live in Texas so that might help (I think it gives you a location option).

i went thru this last month...
1. Handlebar, narrow front (56563-95), $42.46
2. Front brake line (45112-96), $44.63
3. Clutch cable kit (38661-00), $27.63
4. Trans lube-QT, $6.95
5. Transmission side cover gasket (36801-87C), $4.00
6. 3- Harness retainers (70345-84), $1.00 each
7. Brake fluid, $10.95
8. HD Service Manual <--- a must have!!!
thanks to Hell Razor (he gave us all the part numbers)
these bars will raise your hands up about 3 or 4 inches and back about 2 or three inches allowing you to be in a more comfortable riding position.
before i did mine, i got some input from the wrench at my dealer. if you use these bars, you will not have to change the switch housings. could be a big pain since the wires are run thru the backbone of the frame.... after you bolt the new bars on and and put it all together you'll notice the switch housing wires won't reach..... here's the secret: on the right side of the frame, in front of the tank is a rubber plug... on the backside of that plug is a nylon zip tie that you will need to cut with a pair of side cutters. be careful as you only want to cut the tie, not the wires!!!! once you cut the tie, you will be able to wiggle enough wire out of the frame (about 4 to 6 inches) for the new location of the switch housings. don't pull on the wires too hard either as you may pull the plugs apart or the wires out of the plugs...BADDDDD.
connect the new clutch cable to the trans side cover first, then connect the cable to the lever.
you won't need an entire quart of tranny oil either... but be sure to put a drain pan under that area when you take the cover off.
and one more thing, be sure you have an HD Service Manual before you start this job.
hope this helps.

I went to the Hardly Zone and found a user "grimm" but I'm not certain that it's you. Besides, I need a detailed pic of the bars and risers, perhaps from two angles.
All you have to do to get the pic to show here is: Up it to The Hardly Zone, view it, then right click and hold down, then use the menu to "open image in a new window". Copy that url from that new window, then come back here and click on the "image" button and paste that URL between the image tags like this: [IMG]IMAGE URL HERE [/IMG]
