You'll need some dogbone wrenches to torque some of those fasteners, some allen keys. Definitely take the tank off for room.
This ones a biggie. .q-tips, brakleen, and compressed air for the bolt holes the covers thread into. Many have re-assembled without doing this step and busted through the head casting.
New breather assembly gaskets as well while you're in there. Follow the manual and there's some guides on this forum that helped when I did mine.

I think I'm gonna do the top covers and the push rod tubes in black. I'm gonna leave the bottom covers in chrome. So it will look kinda like the street bob motor. I kinda like the contrast with just a little chrome. I should have most of the tools I need, I may need to get some dog bones if open/closed wrenches won't fit.

Really no need at all to pull the tank....I had plenty of room when I did mine and my brother's bikes by propping the tank up with a 2x4.
The backbone of the frame is what's in the way more than the tank.
Don't touch the head bolts unless you plan on removing them...they are lock-tighted in place and should not be turned. If they were loose, you'd know it by now.
If you plan on going farther than just rocker boxes, check this out:
