Seems like a lot of people are switching to black but I would either keep the used chrome rocker covers or try to sell them. Check around on here and ebay for approximate pricing but those things aren't cheap and you might recover some of your money.

Check how much to get yours powder coated before buying new ones.

And why just trash them if you buy others?? Try to sell them or just hang on to them, someone might want them one day, even you might want to go back

You'll need some dogbone wrenches to torque some of those fasteners, some allen keys. Definitely take the tank off for room.

This ones a biggie. .q-tips, brakleen, and compressed air for the bolt holes the covers thread into. Many have re-assembled without doing this step and busted through the head casting.

New breather assembly gaskets as well while you're in there. Follow the manual and there's some guides on this forum that helped when I did mine.

I think I'm gonna do the top covers and the push rod tubes in black. I'm gonna leave the bottom covers in chrome. So it will look kinda like the street bob motor. I kinda like the contrast with just a little chrome. I should have most of the tools I need, I may need to get some dog bones if open/closed wrenches won't fit.

Really no need at all to pull the tank....I had plenty of room when I did mine and my brother's bikes by propping the tank up with a 2x4.

The backbone of the frame is what's in the way more than the tank.

Don't touch the head bolts unless you plan on removing them...they are lock-tighted in place and should not be turned. If they were loose, you'd know it by now.

If you plan on going farther than just rocker boxes, check this out:

I agree. Especially if you are just doing the top covers only. I propped my tank up with a 2x4 when I installed my top covers. No issues at all with the tank being in the way.

I did upper and lower without a problem. Just propped the back of the tank with a 2x4 like mentioned above. I have my stock rockers and you can do the rocker cover swap with Joe at powder pros. Just pay for shipping and I'll send them your way.

I did mine, and that means that just about anyone with a little bit of patience can do it.

Now is the time to decide what you want to do with the push rod covers/blocks.
