Exclamation Help! Using heat question

Novice here...

I need to get a couple of screws loose that I can't seem to break free.

I know you have to heat them up with a torch to loosen up the locktite sometimes.

How exactly do I go about this?

How long do I heat the screw?

Do I let it cool or immediately try and break it loose while its still hot?

Thanks!

Heat gun or even a hair dryer will work for most any bolt on your bike. Just heat it up for a while and bust it loose while it's still hot. Only time I've ever had to used a torch is on really old rusted/corroded ****.

Before I would try heat on that I would try a longer wrench for more leverage.

Got them off...

I don't have a longer wrench, but I did end up using a little heat from a butane pencil torch...

Thanks all

How about a 18 inch 1/2 drive breaker bar. Seriously.

I have never had any success with heating a tight bolt to loosen it up. It just never worked for me although I have had some success loosening tight bolts by heating up the part it is screwed into.

I have also broken a few bolts and screws in my time, enough to get pretty good at drilling, tapping, and repairing boogered holes.

If you don't have a longer wrench, a short piece of pipe as a "cheater" will work. Slip it over the end of the wrench.

Old school cheater bar !

If it is metal that a bolt is screwed into a torch is usually okay. If there is plastic anywhere around you may want to skip the torch. Some of the Loctite does require some heat. You do want to "melt" it them remove the bolt. Shouldn't take much though.
This is all for future reference of course.
