2003 Lowrider questions
I am now looking at 2003 Lowrider. It has the Gold Key package and alarm. Just shy of 10,000 miles for $12,000 OBO. The owner states that it did have some problems going into neutral when she got it, 2 yrs ago, but has gotten better lately. She also said that all she had done is oil changes by a friend that is a motorcycle mechanic. I am going to see it Tues or Thurs evening and hopefully ride it! I won't give her $12,000 for it. Was thinking $10,500 or $11,000. Also, the Gold Key package included some other carb.
Do you think that is a good price? What about the miles, shifting issues and only oil changes for the last 2 years? Is the other carb good, bad, whatever?
Any advice is GREATLY appreciated!!!
Thanks,
Larry

RE: 2003 Lowrider questions
If she got it 2 years ago, does that mean she is the 2nd owner? If so, what about the original owner?
If she is the original owner however, the bike may be a good buy if you can get it for 11K and a great buy for 10K.
With that amount of milage on it all of the bugs will have shown up by now, so I would not be too concerned about anything if the bike starts easy, rides good and does not smoke. Let us know what you decide to do.....pg

RE: 2003 Lowrider questions
Just for comparison, I recently bought a 2005 Low Rider, one owner, mint condition, 7500 mile bike with many extras for $10500.Based on my research, this was an excellent price and not a typical price, but you can use this information for leverage if you need to
I wouldn't worry at all about the carburetor... if you had to, you can pick up a used Keihin CV for $50 or so, or you can get a new Mikuni HSR42 Easy Kitfor about $300.
I would not worry about the miles either... 10Kjust means it's been ridden. I put about 5000 per year on my bike, so 10K would certainly not be excessive for a 2003. If the oil has been changed a few times, then things should be fine. If you buy it, then plan to do a full 10K service (which includes pretty much every service item) and you'll be good to go.
As far as the neutral thing, that could be something to worry about, but you've got to wonder if the issue was with the rider and not with the transmission. Maybe it got better recently because she finally learned how to do it. Check it out for yourself.

RE: 2003 Lowrider questions
I have an 03 Lower Rider, and have had no problems with it but the neutral issue which is common in the FXDL. When I did my 10,000 mile service I just made sure that the proper amount of primary fluid was added, they over fill it at most places. Read your manual and add the correct amount ( it does not take the full bottle ). I think the manual states 26 or 28 OZ, I did that and it shifts perfectly.

Sound like a pretty good deal to me..I wouldn't worry at all about the mileage. Iput 5k on my 07 Bobber since picking it up in January...I had 36k miles on my 05 RoadGlide when I traded it...have a dealer do the 10k service and go through everything...Switch to a Mikuni carb and don't worry about oil changes only for the last two years the factory recomends services at 5k and 10k...10k being the biggie...So just have that one done and you'll be fine...Then put some miles on the bike....

RE: 2003 Lowrider questions
The market is kinda flooded with harleys now so the prices aren't as high as they were a few years ago. Used bikes aren't bringing as much as they did. I'd go for around $11000 and see where it goes. You can always go up but not down. The shifting could just be something as simple as syn 3 in the trans which would make it shift crummy.
