My 02 WG has the same problem. I have asked several mechanics and they all tell me it is just a part of the WG. One mechanic told me that he has owned and serviced several WGs and they all have had the problem. Although mine has the "clunk" on hard bumps I have never had any control problems or hard stopping problems.

 

I too had the same problem. Dealer first tried torking the nut. Second time I went in I mentioned it again. This time they replaced the bearings and no more problem for me.

 

had the Wide glide clunk on my '06 wide glide. Tightened the neck and the tank bolt. Not sure which one did it but the clunk when away.

 

Did you tighten the bolt on the very top or the one that's supposed to be underneath the top of the triple clamp?

See that's what I did and it fixed mine too it seems like. But the other guy said the top nut doesn't change bearing preload, so I almost wonder if something else is causing trouble but tightening the nut that we did fixes it for some reason.

 

Although not a Wide Glide my 06 Low Rider had the same problem new, dealer tigtened bolt and added fluid under warranty and it went away. Good luck.

 

Had the same problem with my 06 Street Bob. It was in fact loose steering head nuts. It was still under warranty, so I had the stealer fix it for me. By the way, the 5000 mile service is just an oil change, and a steering head adjustment according to Van Nuys Harley.

Sounds like a lot of time the problem is just the nut being too loose...clunkity clunk...
