Default ? advantage of a 2pc rotor over 1 pc. ?

So besides looking cooler is there any performance different between a 2 Pc. rotor over a 1 Pc. rotor. I'm looking at new wheels and rotors and the 2pc. are $75 to $100 more each. My 2011 Wg. Came with 2pc. It has 6500 miles on it and front pulsates a little.

Is 'one piece' a solid rotor and a 'two piece' a floating rotor? Is this what you mean. Floating is technically best.

Here is a tech piece on solid, semi-floating and true full floating rotors. I guess ours are really semi floating and they sure do look cooler.

On my 1999 1200S with 3 floating rotors I had to take a large 'e-z out' and rotate the round connectors to free them up to get them all properly 'floating' again. Perhaps this may help you before you pull out the checkbook.

Semi Floating is all you need.. Full floating is only need to fixed mount single side/piston calipers.. As stated in the link. Semi floating help keep the rotor from warping from the heat generated in braking.. In a heavy bike, aggressive pace down hill, it's good to have semi floating rotors.. If you are not into heavy braking, you can get the fixed rotors.. If you like to get it on,, the floating rotors have advantages.

I don't think there is much difference really, how this works is

1. a 2 piece rotor keeps the inner part of the rotor cooler so it doesn't warp. Warping on the inner part of the rotor has more of an effect than the outer part because of the geometry.

but unless your going to run it really hard it shouldn't really matter.

On a WG? 2 piece rotors are a waste of money.

If you have a brake it "pulsates." It is caused by an uneven layer of brake pad material embeded into the swept surface of the rotor. Remove this layer of material, and you'll have a smooth brake again. Some do this by getting their rotors polished or "swirled".

This happens when a different brake pad maker is supstituted for the OEM pads' composition. Stick to the same pad maker thru out the life of the rotor. Your rotors should last >250,000 miles, btw.

Default 1 or 2 pc. rotors

Hey guys thanks for the info. I guess I could clean mine up and run it. Then save up for the two Pc. floater/semi floater. Even if it is just for the cool factor. I haven't read up yet to figure out which one I have stock from Hd. And or just do the front, you can hardly see the back anyway with my bags on it.

With new pads I also 'resurface' the rotor with 60grit emory cloth. I score it in about a 60* crosshatch pattern. Its enough to clear any old residual brake pad material and provides a fresh, clean surface to bed the new pads into.
