Default A thought on custom gas tank application for FXD

I just had my 07 superlide tank painted black (after sanding the hell out of it to get that stupid sticker emblem from under the clear coat) and put a 62 pan head emblem on it. It came out real good but while staring at the bike I had a bit of a brain storm:

What if I got a street bob or lowrider gas tank and put the street bob tank trim on it. In leu of the speedometer, get the Tachometer kit for superglides and mounted the tach (it will be the same size) in place of the tank mounted speedo. I like my bar mounted speedometer but having a tach would be nice and this would be a unique way to have a tach without clustering up the bars.

Thoughts?

Funny you bring it up....I bought me my 2nd gas tank to paint....And I've been thinking about either customizing the center strip to incorporate a speedo, or sell it and put a Street Bob tank setup on my bike......I personally HATE the handlebar speedo.

In your case I would get the wide glide console. HD makes a really nice gauge where the top half is speed bottom tach. Part of the reason I got the superglide is because it has the handlebar mounted speed. The frustrating part is that ther is almost no accessories for the superglide tank. I really like the combonation fuel/amp meter that Kuryakyn makes (I got heated grips, heated vest and pants and driving lights so an ammeter would be a good thing) but it does not exist for the superglide.

I did a quick photoshop of what I am thinking:
Remember, the gas tank gauge will be the tachometer.

Another photochop from the side. This idea is really growing on me!
After thinking about it I would put the speedo in the tank and mount the tach on the bar (Just makes sense) I would alter the harness a but to keep the idiot lights on the top clamp.

At that rate maybe a (can't say the name) would have been a better way to go.

As much as I do like the SB There are several reasons I did get the superglide:
I like cast wheels (That would have been an expensive change with the SB)
I am not fond of apes
I do like the handlebar mounted gauge (Just looking at adding another gauge or2 without being too cluttered)
The SG sits like an inch taller and I do love twisty roads.

Other that those items it was a pretty tough decision.

Only thing I like about the Bob. Looked at them again last week at Mills and still can't understand all the fuss.

Here is the killer,I'veactuallykicked around the idea of putting an fxd tank on my bob. I love the look and wouldn't mind having the instruments up high.
