Installed new grips and throttle is sticking
...sometimes.
So I need help folks. I got myself some new H-D Chrome and Rubber Grips to match my pegs (Part #56263-96A) as a present for myself and because the stock grips are slippery and worn out. I have a 2008 FXDL.
Anyway, I put everything on but every time I tighten up the switch housing on the right side the throttle grip sticks and doesn't snap back. I've searched and made adjustments. The bottom throttle lock is open all the way, I've adjusted my throttle/idle cables, repositioned the friction boot at the bottom of the housing and no luck.
Then I notice the switch housing is still loose after I tighten everything. When I pull the housing towards end of the handle bar the grip doesn't stick and returns to idle easily. So I think it's the housing. I loosened the brake clamp and moved everything slightly to the right.
It doesn't stick that bad but unfortunately still doesn't easily snap back. I've attached two pics. When I tighten the top screw everything seems to close up ok with no gaps. But when I tighten the bottom screw the housing opens a little and wiggles slightly. Is this normal? I'm so frustrated I feel like taking it to my local indy shop and have them fix/mess with it.
What am I missing here? I keep taking the housing off and putting it back on. All no go.
Just to note, I did reinstall the original grip. Surprisingly it was doing the same and the throttle wouldn't snap back..

Not sure if this will help but I just changed my grips and cables last weekend and had the same problem. It was two things first the half moon shaped piece for the cruise adjuster was not sitting on the pin. Second I had to re adjust my cables until it would snap back. It would just very slowly roll back. Hope this helps.

If you've properly adjusted the throttle cables and checked the thumb screw on the bottom of the housing then there's a good chance that the bar end is hanging up on the grip. Either the grip/housing is sitting too far in on the bar or there's a bur on the bar end that's dragging on the grip. Can you wiggle the grip in and out slightly? There should be a little play there. There are little alignment notches that should line up on the housing, if that's not lined up then the housing won't fully close when you tighten the screws. Also check that your not pinching wires in there. You can also lube the bar and grip to help it slide but it should slide easily without it

Thanks for the suggestions guys. This is extremely frustrating. After taking it off and reassembling a hundred times, I was able to get it on there much better than before. The switch housing has a very, very slight wiggle but now I need to adjust my throttle.
I'm still having issues with the throttle not snapping back in place like before. It's minor compared to before but it's there...especially when I turn the wheel to the right full lock. I guess right now I have to keep messing with the throttle cables until I get it right. Bah.

I just did grips on my Dyna. I think I know what your problem is.
The two sections of the "hardware"; the switch housing and the front brake/hydraulic section, have to "mate" together. There is a little tab and slot arrangement, and the two pieces snuggle up against each other. When that is correct, there is NO gap between the two sections, and there should be no gap in the two halves of the switch housing.
Loosen up the screws for both sections, and wiggle them against each other a little bit. You should feel the two sections slip into alignment with each other when they fit correctly.
Or, you can pop off the top half of the switch housing and show us your throttle cable connections. You may not have the ball ends completely down into the slots, and they're binding when you put the top half of the switch housing on.
