Purchase Advice (2002 FXDX vs. 2009 FXD)
Hey guys,
Looking to get my first Dyna. Ive been reading reviews, threads, etc like a crazy person. Trying to research all the Dyna specifics that I can. I currently own a Iron 883 and am looking to step up.
My heart is pretty set on a very nice 2002 FXDX not too far from me. While looking on craigslist etc I have also found a very nice 2009 FXD that has me debating my choices.
My goal is to build a blacked out club style bike. Each will require powder coating. (hot topic I know...)
I am starting this thread to gain some first hand educated knowledge about these bikes in hopes of making the best decision for now and the future.
I know the FXDX is a hot item and I really really love the style, the stats, the original club bike status etc. I also love the dual disc brakes. They seem to be a great canvas.
But I have also found a good deal on a 2009 FXD. I previously had not thought I could afford a newer model. It also seems like a great canvas for a club bike. I also like the EFI vs. the Carb (i think, just because I used to have carb issues on dirt bikes, and I havent noticed issues with EFI stuff...educate me here if I am wrong! I know carbs are known to be great also!).
Here are some stats on the two bikes:
2002 FXDX
Silver
25K Miles
Stock mid controls
Stock Shocks/Discs/Etc
Stock Pipes with slip ons
Memphis Shades fairing
Stock seat
"Peace Officer Special"
$6400 Asking price
2009 FXD
9k Miles
Black
Stock mid controls
Stock except bars and pipes
$6600 asking price
So is the newer bike with less miles any better? Better in the long run? Is EFI better (for someone with much more limited DIY knowledge)...
Any and all thoughts are appreciated!!!
THanks!
Bp

I'd take the 2002 every day of the week. Dual disc, better rear shocks, a better crank, a carb. The only thing that needs to be checked and possibly changed on taht bike is the cam chain tensioners. It can be expensive to get this done so do a little reserch on what is involved.
An 09 FXD is a dime a dozen bike. An FXDX is a special breed of Dyna. Plus the motor and all covers are already black on the FXDX unlike the FXD with it's crappy looking gray motor cases.

Take no ones word on a used bike. The guy only cares about selling the bike. He'll say anything to get you to buy it. Unless he has pics of what they look like, they could be ready to go or brand new. Just my thoughts so use that as a negotiating tool. If he can produce paperwork showing that they were replaced that is one thing, his word is another.
