Check out glaze as mentioned above. For my bike when I detail it I use a claybar first, then 3m hand glaze, followed by zymol wax with a buffer. Almost look's like looking into a mirror.
hmm 1yrb4hd.... what are them pad things on ur tank....

You want to use a polish.. Depending on the depth or severity of the swirl/scratches.

1st, I recommend once the tank is thoroughly cleaned/washed, I'd use a claybar with spray lube to get rid of any in-paint contamination.. stuff you don't see too easily but if you rub over the tank and feel any little critters here and there like dust etc that's embedded.

2nd, Apply polish and elbow grease or if you can mount up the tank somehow on a bench or rack, you could make it super easy by using one of these... http://www.autogeek.net/po.html
with the appropriate polish.. here's some vid's showing how a pro would do it.. They use a couple different levels of polish for severe swirls then finish up with a glaze and wax.. bada bing! [8D]

Check out the vids on that link... I gotta get me one of those porter cables.

As a former Triumph owner Ifeel qualified to answer.

They are called "knee pads" - rubber pads used to protect the tank if you ride with your knees against the tank sides. They've been on Triumphs since fire.

My previous bike - sold it about a year ago to buy the Low Rider.
