It's reasons like this that I don't like taking my bike on errands and leaving it unattended. Never know what some ahole may come along and do.

 

I've got one better than that, a forum members girl friend scraped a dried splattered bug off my gas tank with her fingernail!

find new friend. Personally a friend Id have just chewed on awhile and educated him before he wound up getting hurt. a stranger id have knocked out (or shot if bigger than me), in front of church or the local bar

 

think I would have just laughed and let it go
it's a bike what the heck is the big deal mine has a few dead bugs and a scratch or two I even put one in the tank myself
also my bike is not that nasty black color so stuf doesn't show as much

 

Paint is cheap. Friends are valuable. If he is really a good friend, thank him for the excuse to get a nice custom paint job, and let it go. If he isn't such a good friend, kick his A$$ and ask him to pay for the nice custom paint job.
