Default Exhaust pipe cleaning

I apologize in advance if this has already been asked but... I just had SE 2 slips added to the new ride. I'm seeing alot of little black spots on my pipes that seem close to impossible to remove. I'm wondering if this is tar or bugs or what. I'm assuming that these are getting really baked on due to the heat. I'm using microfiber rags with HD chrome cleaner primarily to clean the chrome parts on the scoot. Even using my fingernail to try and get these little black specs off doesn't even seem to work.

Any suggestions?

Many thanks in advance!

0000 steel wool is what I generally use.. typically for melted rubber from a boot, etc...

But I would suspect it would work.

NEVER use steel wool or any abrasive cleaner! Over here in Sweden we have a creme that is named POL that is used by Gold- and Silversmiths. That in conjunktion with a little elbow grease takes care of it. Ask your lokal goldsmith what they uses!

I use SOS pads. The soap in them seems to really cut grease and other gunk. No need to bear down and scratch the chrome either.

To each his own.. do a search on here and you are lokely to find the 0000 steel wool is used by many people.

I challenge anyone to look at my chrome and notice a thing.

(that being said.. I am always up to trying a new cleaning product)

Always start with the least aggressive method....Most chrome can be cleaned with soap water and a Magic Eraser..if not try Polishing Soap.....if something you want to use has "steel" in the name, that should be your last resort.

Take a rag and put some gas on it and clean the pipes. That will remove the black specks which are most likely road tar. After they are all cleaned up with the gas, wash them off with soap/water, and take a chrome polish or wax and go over them with that to protect them.

I use 0000 steel wool and it works great. What are those small black spots? Road tar would be bigger. The ones on my pipes are so small, you can only see them when you look real close.
