Well I got more info on the bike. It turns out itis a 1930 VL with the original side car. Still has the original paint in areas. It needs some minor sheet metal workbutis pretty complete. I'm going to go a pick it up in a few weeks and begin a complete tear down and restoration

I did get Steve Slocumb's book from VL Heaven, nice guys up there. I just wish harley made a parts catalogue with exploded views, oh well.

More questions to follow.

Make VERY careful notes, drawings or pics when you disassemble the wheel hubs, they are a real PITA to set up correctly. Good luck & happy restoring!

Google"Faber Cycle and Machine" (Michigan) Tom Faber is a VLguru and can repair cases, jugs etc. He knows "tricks" that make these early bikes more "rideable" in todays world. Also makes beautiful repro springer handlebars.

Idoc, not sure how complete and original it is, but if it is an original is always worth more (IMHO) than any restored bike. Granted it may not look pretty...but chrome don't get you home and it can only be original once.

I'm picking up the bike on Saturday. Once I get a good looka t it I'll know more about who much of the original paint is salvagable. The guy I'm buying it from said it needs some body work on the fenders so I think the paint on the fenders is a wash. I'll post pics when it arrives.

Panz4ever I emailed you about the manual.

Thanks

Peter

Panz4ver, I got the mail. Thank you . There's lots of good technical data there. Also thanks for the link to L&W Side cars. I called them today and they seem like nice people. I have a strange feeling that when I media blast my sheet metal, not much will be left. At about a grand for a new body, it's probably cheeper than having someone hammering out sheet metal to fit.
