Default tired of the carb

I love my bike, when the weather is warm, she drives like a dream. But she is one cold natured bitch and with drag pipes no baffles, the carb fart is very frustrating. My question is this: how much trouble and expense would it be to switch it over to fuel injection? 2000 twin cam 1450cc. Thanks.

Tired of the carb? The carb is not the problem.

You need some back pressure in the pipes for proper carburetion, unless the only reason you have them is to make noise.

Appreciate the advice. The pipes were on it when i bought it. Yeah, baffles would solve the carb fart. But what do you advise about the cold natured issue?

Backfiring through the carburetor is a symptom of a lean mixture. Before you make any adjustments to the mixture, be sure that you don`t have an intake leak.

Changing to fuel injection is no simple matter. I'd stick with the carb.

This is where I'd start.

Sell yours and buy a fuel injected. You will save money that way. I really like the fuel injected bikes.

My bike is stock and it takes a good 20-30 miles before it gets to a good operating temperature. I have replaced intake gaskets twice and it might be time to do it again.

Agree with the baffles. Harleys like a little backpressure in my experience. If nothing else, the Thunder Torque inserts from DKCustoms, (sponsor) would be worth the $25 to try.

Hi,
I am writing you because I also have a 1986 only it is a completely stock FXRD Evo 80, except maybe the carb plate which has a K&N filter on it with a bendix flapper carb behind. Anyway, I just bought it. It starts really great and pulls away just fine after a few minutes. But what gets me is it tends to backfire while accelerating at the beginning of the ride then stops and then when you think everything is running great it backfires again and this may be 20 miles down the road. Any idea about this? Gotta be warm enough after 20 miles? Thanks,Chris
