Default cleaning air filter

i'm new on doing any work on my bike but here goes. it's an 03 nighttrain with a stock air filter. can i still clean it myself? what will i need to do this?

You'd probably be better off to buy the K&N replacement filter for it, along with the service kit. But the filter comes pre-oiled so you wouldn't even need the service kit untill it got dirty.
