California high desert carb swap

California high desert carb swap
I have a 98 dyna lowrider. Stock evo motor. I live in California at about 3500' elevation. A typical ride will take me down to about 500' and back up to 3500'.
It runs lean with the factory settings. It does not idle unless I leave the choke about 1/4 the way out. It has a hiccup when I dip into the throttle during a steady cruise. Its much less a problem at the lower elevations.
It's my understanding that a california carb has the adjustment screws (enrichment, idle) capped off. This is the case with mine. My brother in ohio sent me the carb off his 2002? street glide. It's off a twin cam 88 and has access to the adjustment screws.
I'm looking at being able to adjust the enrichment depending on where im riding using my brothers carb.
Am I barking up the wrong tree? I know u guys are smart. If you get a minute, please help a fella out. Thanks

Before you change any jets, you should disassemble the carb and clean it out, it may not be a tuning issue that is causing the lean condition, you may just need to clean the carburetor. It sounds like you may have some crud in there.
Also be sure there are no intake leaks, they will drive you crazy...
All CV carbs came with a plug covering the idle mixture adjuster, it is simple to remove.
Here is a link to a site with some info on CV carbs, it shows how to remove the plug.

Well, it shouldn't be richer at sea level, as it leans down the lower you go. My 1st guess would be intake seals. My 2000 FB had bad intake manifold brackets and the intake would not seal. Custom Chrome has new brackets and seals for under $10.
At your elevation, I would try the stock settings for jetting. If you are getting a pop under acceleration, increase the size of your pilot jet. You won't be able to adjust the carb on the fly like you could with a Mikuni...
