Default 79 Sporty S&S Super G and Stock pics

I bought this brand new S&S super G off ebay a few years ago. I have an old 79 sporty that I wanted to put it on because the stock carb was always giving me fits. Well to make a long story short, I pulled it out today to put it on the bike and here's what I realized.

Stock carb is way smaller bore and also about 2" 13/16th between centers on the bolt pattern.

S&S Super G is a monster carb and has about a 3" 1/8 between centers bolt pattern.

Should I buy a different intake manifold or trade this monster S&S with someone for a good but smaller carb?

Man the S&S is so pretty though, it's brand new with the extra jets and the whole smear that come with it.

the super G is a race/big ci carb..an iron head can probably use a E but a B is a better fit..i have a super E on my 80" shovel and it is a little big

Yep, stick it back on EBAY, someone with 100 + cubes might want it!

Any S&S carburetor on a stock sporty is a lot of carburetor. Much better carburetors out there even for a hot rod Harley. Buttery fly carburetors are out dated.

Swap with someone for a Super E, that is the right carb for you, set up properly you can't beat em. Not everyone takes the time to jet them correctly.

Good Luck

I really don't want to steal this thread but my problem seems to fit. My Neighbor has an '80 Iron head. 9 years ago he bought a Super B carb and could never get it running after he swaped out the carb. He thought it wasn't getting any fire but couldn't figure it out and gave up. Well I started to help him get the bike running after all these years, cleaned up the points plate. adjusted the points gap set the timing cleaned out the Super B of what little gas that was in it, It appears very simple inside. When we tried to start it today we did get it to start to cough and we could almost get it to run if we covered up most of the intake with our hand but gas would start to run out of it and it would die. He still had his original Zenith carb so we put that back on the bike and after some fiddling around with it we did get the bike running. He would still like to put the Super B on it but Motrhd mentioned something about setting it up correctly.

Well exactly what needs to be done to get it running?!?

Carburators seem to be my greatest weakness so ANY HELP would be welcome and most appreciated!

Grog, a couple of things about your post, an '80 Iron head did not have points or a zenith carburetor. It had an electronic ignition and a kiehin carb from the factory. As for the S&S, did you have the enrichener pulled up ? The enrichener is the T on top of the carb, you pull it up and turn it a quarter turn so it stays up. When the engine warms up you close the enrichener. The super B does not have an accelorator pump so it is more of a roll on carb rather than a snap open carb. The idle mixture is adjustable, the long jet in the float bowl is the mid range, the jet on the bottom of the carb inside the float bowl is the main jet. A call to S&S and you tell them about the bike, they will give you baseline jetting recommendations.

Good luck

Well now that my bike is back in my garage I can help out my neighbor some more. We talked to my mechanic about the problem and he recomended some jets and the proper size intake manifold which he had an old one on hand. so we'll get that together and see how it goes.

Datafan, that carb is way too big. I have a G on my S&S 107" touring motor, but they fit an E to their 111", so that gives you an idea of what these carbs are suitable for.
