How long does new paint need to harden before gas won't strip it?
I had my bike painted, finally, and it looked good. Let it harden for nearly 10 days, then some gas got on it and the new paint peeled off, clear to the metal.
I didn't spill the gas on it. The vent in the cap must not be working. The bike was in the sun, and when it got hot, the gas "boiled" out of the tank on the left side. Ruined the paintjob, made me sick to my stomach. Some peeled, a bunch blistered.
I am going to wait until winter to tear it back down. I have enough paint left to paint it again, thank goodness. One thing that PO's me is that I see no sealer on the tank, and he was supposed to seal it, I gave him enough to seal a car. I hope that doesn't come back and haunt me.
Thanx very much, Randy D.

Is there any special paint to put on a gas tank? The gas stripped the clearcoat, the dbc500 with the flake, the base black, and the primer.
Really made a helluva mess.
Thank you again, RandyD

Randy, the gas will always have an effect on paint regardless of cure time unless you catch it as it happens. clean it up and repaint with your choice of color, but get some epoxy clearcoat and do it up with that let cure at least 7 days before putting gas in it and that should offer very good protection from the nastyness gas leaves on paint

Just had my tank re-painted. The previous owner had repainted it once before, and overtightened the console gasket...it leaked, and I had the paint bubble up, all the way to the metal.
My paint guy (whom I trust) told me to wait 2 months for the clear to cure. He said no gas on it, and no wax on it for 2 months.

i know it bubbled what i meant was the type of paint he used for your bike was a good paint and when you get it repainted let it cure. The solvent's are still coming out of the paint for approx 2 to 3 months that's when it is properly cured. Then you can wax it and gas shouldn't lift the paint unless it's left on a long time. I run a bodyshop so i know paint. By the way the best wax is a paste wax. Don't let it dry and wipe it off. For the best protection you rub the wax in till it disapear's then polish it.
