Carb sputter
I have a 2005 883 with SE Stage 1 air filter.SE slip on pipes and A cv dynojet instaled at the dealer.Ater riding about 1/2 an hour the bike starts to sputter and sometimes the engine light comes on when I´m at 1/4 throttle in 1st and sometimes 2nd gear.just enough to **** me off, at speed ,it runs great. I don´t know what Jets I have in the carb as you can´t see or read the numbers.I´ve cleaned it and it runs fine for awhile then when i get into stop and go situations it craps out on me. any help please??

Problem seems temp. related, ie; runs crappy after about 1/2 hour of riding. When the motor gets to temp. its performance is more sensitive to a poor fuel air mixture. The symptoms you describe can be caused by a float level issue or something in the needle / seat either raising the gas level in the bowl above or lowering it below spec. and either flooding or starving the motor of fuel. Might have a look at the vac. diaphram to see if it has a tear in it due to mis-seating under the cap when installed, (if the needle and/or the slide was tweaked or replaced.) Lastly, if the VOES is not connected or is improperly connected, it could be fouling the signal to the ecm, (affecting timing), and triggering the engine light.
Let us know what you find out.

carb sputter
Thanks for your response ad inspiration ,,I took the whole carb part and cleanedi it again.Messed with the float and float needle as you suggested ( and I thought) and ajusted (tweeked) the mixture screw out 2 turns instead of the 2 1/2 or3 that other sites say to do,, now it's runs great.. Thanks for the help... As for the other 112 HIts you must be readers and not riders,, thanks to you too as I'know I'll be passing you at the red lights and on the highway,,

Well my problem is similar but not quite the same. 2004 FXDL w/Carb. 4000 miles on it . Goes through the gears just fine but when I'm holding steady at 60 mph, it kicks, bucks, coughs, and hic-ups. With an occasional BLOOP from the air cleaner. Quite annoying Some days it won't do it at all. But I did notice it seems to do it early morning, and in the heat of the day it does it much less if any. Your comment (Velocity1) about the temperature is what attracted me to this thread. Any thoughts? Thanks

Goes throught the gears fine but when I hold steady at 60 mph, it kicks bucks, coughs and hic-ups, with an occasional Bloop from the air cleaner. Very annoying!. It doen't do it all the time though. I noticed it does it in the early morning cool, and if I ride in the colder months. But when its the heat of the day it doesn't seem to do it much if at all. Your comment (Velocity1) about the temperature attracted me to this thread. Would you please further those thought about the Temp? Any thoughts? Thanks

Carb Hicups
How often do you ride? sometimes if you leave the bike sitting for a week or 2 gasoline can start to leave varnish in the bowl, not only for winter storage.Do you run Hight test? It´s a good idea.Last if it only does it at speed check the main jet size. Go up or down one size at a time.If you go up and it gets worse then go down and vice versa.Sounds like the slow curcuit is ok(no popping or coughing). Velocity1 is correct about temp and fuel air mixture.Mine was confusing too because some days it would do it and then others not or not as much or more> It runs great now after i took my time and made the proper adjustments. I was thinking to buy a new fuel injected model but I like the carb ,,I think the sound is better..Cannolis are great, but I prefer then gun..

I ride the bike Mon, Wed, and Fri. On the way in today it did the hic-up thing. On the way home it did not. Very strange. But I tend to agree with the temp thing. Expansion makes alot of sense. Now all I have to do is learn how to change jets!! Something I have been avoiding all my life while dealing with cars. If my carb was bad I just changed it. Never wanted to get involved with rebuilding it. Guess I have to learn now!!
I think I would agree on the gun though Thanks. Ciao!
