Sign of lean condition. The question is why?

When was the last time you refeshed carb, intake seals, vacuum and fuel lines? Do you know what mainjet, pilot jet, and jet needle you have?

Remove the carb, disassemble and clean.

Replace the intake seals.

Replace fuel and vacuum hoses.

Remove petcock and clean the screen.

Or, you could turn the low speed jet needle counter clockwise 1/8 turn.

By choking it you're richening the mixture so it's running lean, which means either too much air....vacuum leak, or not enough fuel.... lot's of possibilities. All the suggestions Dan89FLSTC mentioned are a great idea and more than likely where you problem lies.
