According to a few performance Harley builders I have talked to here the CV40 will support around 100 hp, and the HSR42 up to 110 hp.
So as long as my other mods are not enough to reach over 100 hp the CV would be as good as the Mikuni. But if the other mods support it changing to the Mikuni could add a few more hp at the top end. That is what I meant. I will take my bike to a Dyno in a few weeks so I guess I will know more then

In hindsight I think I should have stayed with the CV, I rarely ride at 6000 rpm anyway and I think it's only there the Mikuni offers any advantage over the CV. There are a few drawbacks with the Mikuni in my opinion, the mounting requires an extra adapter to the air cleaner that is just pushed on, with an o-ring seal, the whole arrangement feels less stable than the CV that is attached directly with screws, especially since the Mikuni is bigger and heavier. Add to that the annoying rattle, and it is not really very pretty if that matters.

I guess I was encouraged by reading a lot of people saying it would give a quicker throttle response, but I must say the difference is minimal.

I would love to get my hands on a CV44 but those are almost impossible to find, at least on this side of the Atlantic

They are difficult to find on this side 10 years ago and near impossible to find now. Of course, if funds are avaialble, Mr. Woods offers his tricked out and very pricey modified CVs.

I have understood that Mr Woods carbs work really well, but that kind of funds are unfortunately not available 😁

As a follow-up.

I tried a #46 without much difference. I then tried a #48 that I got off @mazon and that did the trick, no more coughing.
I'm still waiting on my CV Performance kit. I will replace manifold seals at that time.

Thanks everyone for your help and support.

When you get the seals, put it back to the 46 or 45 if you have one. The 48 is only masking the issue. You'll have much better low end and throttle response plus easier to get great fuel mileage.

Not a problem, thanks! I'm getting good at changing jets 🤣

The Conclusion:
The vacuum slide was drilled over 1/8th, after market needle, 45 slow jet and 180 main jet.

Replaced vacuum slide, needle, 48 slow jet, 190 main jet. Life is good 👍

Thanks everyone

mikuni vm carb
simple, easy to tune and runs like a scalded dog. been running one since 1975. it gets rid of the vac slide and accel pump. the cv is a good choice if you change elevation a lot.
