Default Carb Cough / Backfire?

When blipping the throttle, I sometimes get a backfire from the carb.
It doesn't happen often but sometimes the engine will die. Is this rich or lean? Where should I start?

Usually lean. But the question is, did this just start? Did it run without backfire previously? What I'm getting at is if it ran fine before, then something changed (unless you made a change).

If it's the bike in your signature, last time the intake seals changed? Old fuel? Again, any work done or parts changed?

stop blipping the throttle, easy fix!!!
probably nothing wrong!!!
when you blip the throttle, several things can happen.
1. the accel circuit adds extra fuel
2. the engine goes lean on the opening
3. then engine goes rich on closing
4. plugs will miss fire on either/or
5. on the next opening, the mix goes to ignitable but since the flame is late or lazy, coughs back
6. this upset pulls more fuel through the main jet which is NOT supposed to be in the circuit, only 3/4 and above running
7. this fuel plus the idle and transfer ports flood the engine and it dies.
8. blipping is hard on the crank

Thanks for the insight...

The bike has had this issue since since I have owned it for about 1 year.

The bike has aftermarket mufflers and Andrews TW37 cams. It's my understanding that our local HD dealer (Patriot) re-jetted the carb.

Heed the advice of Bustert.

What carb do you have? Regardless, time to see what jetting is in your carb. I would change out intake seals just for good measure but wait till you inspect the carb and know what your jetting is. What do the plugs look like?

Advice taken, thank you!
I will pull plugs and sneak a peek. I will order the intake seals. I just finished replacing fork springs and seals.
