Default Help identify carb

So I’ve finally got started on my Sportster XLX-1000 1983. It’s been sitting there in my garage for 10-15 years and I’m ready to finally get this baby running.

I haven’t been doing this stuff before so it’s a lot of googling and YouTubing to get me startet.

When I bought the bike used in 1995, the previous owner said it had a Mikuni carb. I had no reason to doubt him since my sportster was the fastest among my peers but now I’m a bit puzzled.

There are no Mikuni markings on the carb, only marking is “AMF Harley Davidson. Japan”

I would appreciate help identify make and model as I’m looking for manuals.

Default AMF years

I was under the impression that the AMF years ended in 1981. How come I have a AMF carb on my 1983 bike? Did HD continue to use AMF parts for several years?

It`s a Keihin carb...

In those days Harley wasn`t known to scrap parts, they would use them all up.

I bet this is the case with your carburetor.

Default Mistery solved

So I did some heavy thinking and also checked with my brother in law who used the bike for a season or two. He did not swap any carb. My friend who helped med buy the bike in 1995 has been sleepless over this because he was 110% certain the bike had a mikuni carb.

Then it hit me: My younger brother had a crash with the bike way back maybe in 96 or 97 and i remember the insurance replaced the gastank due to.a dent. So I reached out to him and he confirmed that also the carb was replaced by the garage fixing the bike.

So now I’m back with that AMF carb but I have a brand new S&S sitting there, waiting in its box. Should I go with the AMF or the S&S?
