TFF.. I wouldn't run a G an 88 ci motor unless it was a higher performance motor like a sporty or even a hot EVO.. Don't care what SnS says. Ran a G on a hot 95 and it ran real well. The problem with running a G on a mild 88 ci TC is that the mileage will likely suck. The cross over from intermediate to main will be sensitive and probably end up on the rich side. An E will give better mileage. Nothing wrong with the stock CV in this case fer sure.

So I could better trade the G for an E carb?

Is the manifold from both carbs the same?
