Could be, there's something going on with the vacuum side of the system, check all the hoses going to the carb. I'm not familiar with the specifics on your model so can't be much help in that direction sorry.

Those slides do wear out and our crappy ethanol gas does not help.

Okay, so I think I found my issue. I said at the start that those tubes were cracked and what not so I replaced them(with some fuel line from autozone) but I guess I cut them a bit too long so they were forced up against the metal plate on the filter blocking them. I cut them a bit shorter before I put the cover back on this time and now she runs like a dream. Seems to have more power than before with no backfiring or power loss. I only got up to about 55 tonight so I guess it's a waiting to see how she does on the highway now.

Default that is wierd

i though engines do not need air filters to run?
i have not had a motor stall because it has no filter or cracked breather tubes.
i just rebuilt a 05 rk 99b cv carb and did not replace any Breather Tubes.
one breather tubes does have cracks. will be replaced one day.
cracks did not make a differance in performance.

looks like your carb needs cleaned.
guess if the motor is not stalling after the shorter tube fix.
why mess with the carb anymore.

I believe it will run without an air cleaner sure, but as compression increases I think it was forcing those cracks open resulting in an intake leak at highway speeds. Then when I replaced the breather they were too small and forced up against the air cleaner plate. Even then i think the internal diameter of the tubes was far too small, messing with the air fuel mix. Either way I ended up cleaning the jets out just in case.
