Exclamation What do I do to the carb after I install shortshots and new a/c?

I just bought a 04' xl1200 custom and I am planning on putting V&H shortshots and a new free flowing a/c.
My questions are:
1) Should I re-jet the carb myself or to the dealer? I have worked on cars for years but this is my first motorcycle.
2) Also what aftermarket a/c do you recommend?

Thank you for your time.
Roland

yes , you will need to rejet the carb ...you need to ride it till it's warm up good and see how bad it is popping on decel ...at low rpm and a fairy high rpm ...whatever size slow jet is in it (either a 42 or 45 ) ...you will need a 48 to start ..depending on where you live ...elevation ..we are at sea level and the 48 works very well in the sportster or 88 ...when done , you should not need to choke it very much at cold start up ...maybe pull it on then off just after it starts ...if not ..will be very rich and may foul plugs ..will neet to keep it running with the throttle ...till warm ...

unless you like the popping !!! but it will be very lean !!! go up one size on the main jet ...if it is still surging at cruz steady speed ..go up one more time or add a washer under the needle ...

Thank you. I am at 886ft of elevation what would you recommend for the pilot jet? I saw you said 48 for the pilot jet. Also how can I tell what the number is of the main jet?

42 or 45 pilot, 170 or so on the main.
Remove the welch plug that masks the air/idle adj. screw, and set that between 2 1/2-3 turns.
Throttle wheel idle should be set at a comfortable idle, or around 1000 rpms.
Should get you in the ballpark, shy of a dyno tune.
