Default Smell gas with heavy acceleration - Carb

So I've been playing with the air/fuel mix screw after going from a Hypercharger to a Mach 2 air cleaner. I was getting some backfiring at decel, so I've been richening it up....... yesterday on my commute home as I was changing lanes a car decided to do the same thing right behind me and I had to hit the throttle big time.......after which I noticed the smell of gas. It went away quickly and I suppose it could have been from a car or something, but I'm currious, if I'm running to rich will gas make it into the air cleaner??

If you are moving the gas smell will be from something ahead of you .

As to running rich, causing fuel to get into the air cleaner, Never happen.
if the intake valve is allowing blow back , might happen, but wont run worth a daggum at low rpm
If the float sticks on a carb , might happen , but wont run.

thanks, I didn't think there was a physical way for it to happen, and I was moving, so, it was probably some older car up ahead .... thanks!
