HI,
I have a 2011 FLHX with J&M 7.25", 2ohm speakers. I want to upgrade my receiver without using an external amp. Can I safely install a Kenwood 4-8ohm receiver without worrying about burning it up? Or, do those of you installing receivers install 4 ohm speakers?
Thanks, Randy

The problem with manufacturers like J&M is their product (speakers) are designed to work with Stock HD head units which are either 2 or 8 ohms depending on the year of the bike.
If you're going to add an aftermarket head unit, I don't know of any (at least any that are worth a crap) that support a 2 ohm speaker out the box. You will either have to add an amp at which point your speakers need to be matched to the amp and most support a 2 ohm speaker or you'll have to replace speakers with 4 ohm speakers.

Thanks. I want to change head units so music on my phone is easier to control. Currently have to remove gloves, turn on the phone and find music. A lot safer to stop than try on the go. I guess I'll have to look into speakers as well.

Hi,
I ended up using the Kenwood Excelon KDC-597X receiver, an Arc Audio 125.2 mini amp bought from a forum member, and the Biketronics install kit for the Kenwood. I will be using my existing J&M non-Rokker 7.25" speakers. Just need to wait for warm weather to check it out. Thanks to everyone on the forum for helping me make my decisions.
