help needed on stock set up, well almost stock
2000 ultra, stock radio, cycle sounds new speakers up front done by previous owner. I just purchased a set of hogtunes 1120's from another forum member to change out the rear original speakers as the were cracking up at higher volumes. I put the hogtunes in and put dielectric grease on connections. took the pod connector apart and did the grease there as well, no signs of corrosion on either. The hogtunes are breaking up worse than the original old speakers. Is there something I can clean or check in the fairing on the back of the radio or is this a symptom of the head unit going bad. It does get worse with volume Almost not too bad at the "m" but go past that and light up one line under the "e" and forget about it. The fronts are not breaking up just the rears. I have checked only the connections at the speaker and the pod connector, I have not touched the radio on the inside of the fairing yet. I also used a different mp3 player and wiggled the connection in the aux port but no change was noted. The new hogtunes appear to be in perfect condition and really do not suspect them to be the issue. Just maybe more sensitive to the problem.

I do not remember seeing one, nor do I think there would be one without someone upgrading the speakers and since they were stock I would say no. Yes the fronts were done but not by the guy who had the bike the longest and did all the other stuff

ok from here the easiest test would be to run a temp wire from inside the fairing on the rear outputs of the head unit to the speakers. This will tell you for sure if the head unit is bad.
If they test good, then you know it's your speaker wires and would be easiest to simply replace the wires than troubleshoot why they don't work.

When I lower the volume output on my phone/mp3 player then I can raise the volume on the handlebar and get no breakup although the overall volume is still less, but when I raise the volume on the phone the breakup come back. Does this make any difference. Yes replacing wire would be easier than a new headunit, but at the moment I have neither.

Before I tear into the fairing yet again, let me ask this.

ah my bad.. I didn't catch the hogtunes speakers. Man you can't use those on a 2000 stock head unit.. you'll toast the head unit. Those are 5.75 Ohm speakers and that headunit requires an 8 ohm speaker minimum. You must replace stock speakers on a stock head unit with 8 ohm speakers.
Roger that! Im sure you will want the fronts once you hear them!
Cheers and RIDE SAFE--PEZ

I have someone who has 1120 speakers that wants to sell to me for my 2000 ultra classic. I have a the stock cassette radio and the rear speakers are original and do not work well. Would the 1120 be the proper replacement?

same problem with FM all though not as bad, I suspect due to the line volume of the phone. No I do not have any cassettes.

PS... your iPhone, iPod, Android, etc... whatever you plug into that Aux port should have it's EQ settings flat. Let the head unit's bass and treble do the work..
