Default 2 ohm, 4 ohm, what is the difference?

I have a stock unit on my 2010 ultra. I want different speakers and I am unsure what to get. I may upgrade later with a bigger amp, but it will not be in the near future.

I am looking at these. Found them for around $100 a few other places. Money is tight, but I really need something better than stock right now.

The ohm rating of a speaker is basically the impedance that will be seen by the audio source (head unit or amp)
Your 2010 head unit is rated at 2ohms. Running 4 ohm speakers in the stock system will not hurt it, but will result in decreased volume.
Be sure when you install an aftermarket amp, that it's rating matches the speakers being used. Running speakers with an ohm rating lower than the amp is designed for may result in damage to the amp.

in it's most basic form of explanation is exactly what IC pointed out, VOLUME level. Your headunit is designed to run with 2 ohm speakers, so you should replace your speakers with 2 ohm speakers.
I personally (and I understand $ is tight) would not waste my time or $ replacing 5.25" speakers with 5.25" speakers when there are much better alternatives out there. For $50 you can get a pair of Infiniti Reference 6032si 2 ohm speakers from Amazon and then get a set of 6.5" speaker adapters from Cycle Sounds for $35. Then you're into it for less than what you were going to spend on those kicker 5.25" speakers. This will provide for a good upgrade path later on to an amp and maybe a better set of fairing speakers.

Are the infiniti reference speakers waterproof? I found some hogtunes 5.25 for around $85 on ebay. Are those any good?

The Infiniti Reference do have polypropylene cones so yes they are water resistant. The only waterproof speakers for vehicle audio use are those built with special enclosures around them. I'm not real familiar with the hogtunes speakers other than the 2 sets (5.25" fairing and 5.25" tourpak pod) I bought back in 07 when I put a tourpak, rear pods, and fairing on my roadking. They may have improved since then I don't know but back then was a total waste of $$.

Well I took your advice and ordered the infiniti speakers and the adapters. I will post back on how well it works over stock.
