Ground Zero GZCF 6.5 SPL: HOW much power?
#22
Have you played up and down on the hz scale on LPF, HPF? I found they could fool you into thinking they could handle more than they really could and still sound good.........for a while. I believe that is a big part of the problem. They are too good at handling power and frequency at first, so we are more lax than we should be on the tuning side and it ends up killing them. At least I have heard the same thoughts here a few times and at a couple rallies this year.
Played with the HZ scale a bit at install. I thought 100hz sounded best and also is safe. I'm no pro tuner by any means, actually fairly new to all this stuff. But with these I set the wattage with a meter and test tone. Did the HZ by ear. they sound good and get very loud (granted I'm not blasting them very much, to show people sometimes, while riding I don't find it necessary to have them that loud). But they have been going strong for the last 4-5 months no problem.

I certainly don't claim to be an expert, I'm just listing how I've got mine set and it works well for me.

The reason Carlos set his filter so high is because he is pushing way more power to them than the manufacturer recommends. As wattage goes up the HPF has to go up as well or you will shred the speakers. I am running the recommended 150 watts to my GZs and have the HPF set at their recommendation of 50Hz.

I will say that I've got some Kenwood 6.5s in one of my trucks that do seem to play that low. The reason I say that is they sounded pretty muddy at a 50 Hz setting. I bumped up the filter to 70 and they sounded a lot cleaner.
All of this is just my tinkering. I ain't got enough sense to lick myself without falling off the couch and banging my head on the coffee table. My solution was to sell the table.
