Default DIY Sony HU Water Protection

I decided to get creative and protect my Sony 7000 HU from potential wet conditions, so I thought I'd share what I've done. I watched a Biketronics video and saw how their $500 enclosure is plastic sheeting taped to the radio, so I figured WTH I'll give it a go with heavy foil. I made sure to tape very similarly to BT as well, to protect any openings from moisture intrusion. I know my way is not as protected as BT's radio wrap, however, I'm completely comfortable with my radio's protection now and feel my method allows the radio to radiate heat rather than insulating the heat. I am also fully confident in the leaving the screen uncovered.

Supplies: uninsulated HVAC duct foil, duct/sealing/foil tape (any tape that will resist moisture and heat). This stuff is metal (heavy gauge aluminum foil), so it doesn't let moisture through, it fits snug, and it will [hopefully] help dissipate heat (which is why uninsulated foil is important).

Got a link to what you used? My search keeps bringing up the double bubble stuff.

I don’t know exactly what I have as it was leftover from an old neighbor’s shop building. I would think any industrial aluminum foil would work. Grainger sells it but you’ll end up getting 500 ft for $50. https://www.grainger.com/mobile/prod...ebparentimage$

That is the cost I was coming up with and was hoping to see something substantially cheaper.

This is what I used, with the insulation removed: https://www.homedepot.com/p/Master-F...RP60/100152008. Not any cheaper.

Default Help

Let me see if I can cut/peel away the outer foil from a run of flex duct I have in the attic. I ran a new duct last year into the master bedroom and have a long run left. If so I will take a picture of it and can just give you some enough for covering the HU. Not known if that will be today or tomorrow. But if it works out, again free. Both of you have helped me in the past.

You should be able to peel the insulation off. There will be some adhesive on the foil but that might not be an issue. Rubbing alcohol would take that adhesive off if you wanted to.

I would think so. Just have to be a little more careful with foil like that. Not very thick.

I am sure this would work just fine. It is vynal and should keep water out and be easy to work with.
