JL Audio for budget minded
just curious on feedback re. The JX 400/4 As opposed to the XD400 .
only ever gonna have 4 speakers, fairing and lowers. (Hcx165 and mm652)
looking for good sound from cruising the street to cruising the highway.
jx is half the price. Is it half the amp?
looking to upgrade from an ss 1000 and don’t want to buy more than I need for what I want...if that makes sense.

I have Polk 652s in my tour pack. In the past 5 months, i had powered them with 3 different amps.
Jl600/6 75w
Stinger 700/4 100w
Jl280/4 Bridged 140w
I thought the Polks played well with all 3.
if you plan to stay with a 4 coaxial setup, maybe take peak at a Stinger SPX 700x4. 4x100 at 4ohm velcros nicely on stock tray. Can be found for $260 online
just my 2cents

that stinger be that much of an improvement over the ss?
also how many watts are you sending to the polks?
i have an amp tray similar to Baddazz so mounting not an issue in the 10 batwing.
thanks again for the advice.

I can't say about the ss amp, since i limited experience and none with ss amps. The more knowledgeable guys here im sure will respond. I only had the Stinger before the current jl amps.
If i was only going to stay with the 4 coaxial speakers i started off with...i would have absolutely kept the stinger. I just found i like the while audio thing and a have been constantly expanding/changing my system, so i swapped the Stinger out.
i currently have a Jl280/4 bridged to the 2 Polks, so that is 140w i believe. Frankly i cant tell really a difference from the stinger at 100w. Heck..the 75w from the JL600/6 seemed plenty.
Im sure you will get some advice from audio vets here.

That SS is a proven survivor around here for sure. I would bet you will be happy with it and staying with the 4 6.5s I can't see a $250 improvement over your SS. We just did a Stinger with 4 6.5's and it really does a good job. Again, not sure you would have a measurable difference with an amp upgrade. Those 652's are pretty easy to get along with and sound really good without a ton of power. Hope this helps.
ALSO Your amp is very sellable if you decide to try something else, the audio bug bites hard so keep in mind your future upgrades and look at the big picture.

As you are looking at possibly upgrading your amp do drive your current speakers.
The SS PN4 1000D is a good amp at lower volumes but get dirty at higher volumes.
Then you have to revert back to the old saying
Buy once Cry once when you make a decision
