Default RF 14 & up lid kit replacement 6x9s

The speakers in the kit are a great starting point but I’ve seen a few posts of guys replacing or wanting to replace the 6x9s. Myself included.

So I figured I’d start a post where we can share which speakers work, which ones need modication to work, and which ones won’t work with the RF kit.

To start, it appears Hertz and Sony fit. The VOs take significant modification to fit, if at all. Anyone install the VOs with the kit? What others (brand and model number) fit?

If you’ve tried several speakers, let us know which pair sounded the best and why, bass, SQ, loudness. I think it would also be helpful to state if they share bag space with an 8 or a 10.

Thanks for your input.

So, I have tried several different speakers in the rf lid kit. Those include:
the original rf tms 69
wdx 69's
sony xs-gs 6920 and 6921
hertz hcx 690
hertx cpx 690
hertz mpx 690
pioneer 6900 pros
dd vo 6x9
polk mm692

I can report that the vo's and pioneer pros wont fit without modification. The polks got real hot and ,melted the coil cover off. Out of the rest, the mpx 690's sounded the best but the cpx are close. The sonys also sounded good but have exposed coils also so I am leery of those. The wdx were the loudest but the highs can be harsh sitting still. That harshness goes away when riding at speed. The rf tms69 also sound good but you have to be careful on tuning them as they will not take a lot of power.

I personally like the mpx the best and the cpx second as the cpx is warmer with the highs, just not as loud.

Just my thoughts.

The amp you're pushing these speakers with will impact sound as well so that info will need to be included as well.

Yer sir Bates as that will make a big difference. I used a tm400x4ad with all these speakers.

Great info.

I am am running a Hertz HCP4D. It’s running on 3 channels. 1 channel for two 8MB450s (each are 8ohm) and 2 channels for the RF 6x9s. I am thinking I may run it bridged 2 channel with an 8 and a 6x9 on each.
