Default Your process for setting gains by ear?

For the guys that don't use a DMM or do to get it close and then finish setting gains by ear, what is your process? I've just used a DMM and set them like it is shown in the "Sticky" but would like to see the guys that just "set gains by ear" list their step by step process to get a better understanding how you are doing it. Thanks.

Real easy, turn gain all the way down, turn radio on with volume at 80%, play a song you know well, start cranking up the gain until you notice bad stuff (popping, distortion, etc)

Run through half a dozen more songs and fine tune.

make sure your bike is running for your final tune. The bike pulls more amperage while running and will effect your system!

Where do you have the frequency set while adjusting gains? What about EQ, everything still flat? I'm assuming your setting the front and rear separate? Fade to front to set fronts, then fade to rear to set rear? Thanks.

Set the HU at 3/4 volume, set X-overs at 80HZ... EQ flat, I isolate the 4 corners, with fade and balance, turn up gains till distortion CREEPS in back off a tad. Then I tune it the way I like the EQ set to, and X-overs set the way I like and fine tune a little more without isolating the speakers...ride it and retune...final tune with bike running! Practice makes perfect!
