Looking to upgrade sound 2012 FLHTC
I just bought a 2012 Electra Glide Classic. I love the bike but am looking to upgrade the speakers. I've been looking at Hogtunes and Boom front fairing speakers.
I'm not looking to do much more than replace the fairing speakers and spend a couple hundred bucks. Is it worth the money to just replace the front speakers with one of these brands?
I want to do the work myself. I don't know much about audio but have tools and can follow instructions.

There are 2 ohm speakers that will give you some better sound quality, but there are no "magic" speakers that will give you a noticeable boost in volume with a stock headunit powering them.
Get with Bagger Audio Labs and talk to Haze about one of his entry level systems. He can set you up with a system that is a very easy install and won't set you back a whole lot of coin that will make you smile

I'm not sure how to install an amp and don't like paying the dealer to do work.

The first step out of HD Audio hell is aftermarket speaks and an amp.
If u don't have the cash, take some time and save up. If u don't have the confidence to do the install, that will soon change.

You've already said you're willing to do the install yourself. If you can take your fairing off, you can wire an amp. As others have said, save up some cash and do it right the first time. You'd be surprised how far $500 bucks can get you when it comes to aftermarket audio. We're here to help get you through an install.
