Experimentation with some weird sized Kappas
I didn't really see anyone ever post about a setup like this. This all stemmed from me coming across my factory cvo speakers in the garage the other day.
My 12SERG came with 5x7s with tweeters built into the mounting rings and tweeters mounted where the lower gauges would be typically mounted. I looked at the mounting ring and wondered what was available in a 5x7 that I could throw in the fairing just for ***** and giggles.
I'm running Kappa 693.11i's in my bag lids. I also put a set of 62.11i's in my buddies SG on my old Arc KS125.2. I really liked them with that amp. So I started looking into their 5x7 the 682.11cf's. They are rated 25 watts rms more than the 62.11i's. Their frequency response is a little lower too. I figured since I was impressed with the 6.5 and the 6x9 I might like the 5x7 too.
So I found a set of 682.11cf's on eBay. Picked them up pretty cheap. I was surprised to find them on my doorstep after work. So I took them out and tested them. Checked out, so now the modifications shall commence.
I first took my mounting rings, removed the tweeters, and cut off the mounts for them. I had to trim the speaker basket and re-drill for the mounting screws. One benefit to a plastic basket, you can modify them easily with side cuts and razor knife.
I pulled the fairing apart and yanked the (gasp) Moto 602s out. (I'm glad I did this experiment. One of the Moto tweeter stalks is rattling around.) So a little more trimming on the speakers and they fit. A nice thing on the 5x7s, the tweeters rotate 360 and sit on a slight angle, so I was still able to aim them at my noggin.
I wired them into the SS PN4.1000. After some tweaking and tuning, my ears are ringing . These things get f&@$!? LOUD!! They have some good thump and I haven't put the fairing back on yet. I know it's kinda out of the norm to run a 5x7, but I'm going to try it for a while. I'll try to get a video tomorrow.
