Just double check all of those LL settings and connections and if all is good there, ride on. Could have been a defective / lemon speaker.
Not a chance in hell that wind would cause that speaker to blow, IMHO. Have the HT lids as well and ran a bunch of different speaks with wind being the least of my worries.

I did LL gain setting with a DD1 and ended up at the default setting, 12:00. BT knows what they are doing for the Rushmore HU.

I remember Bill from BT writing somewhere that the Rushmore head units ready turn to garbage at about 4 bars from max. So I never go past that mark with mine. If you are going to absolute max that could be your issue as well.
