I agree, the Boom II upgrade isn't that great. The 602's have the most bass from just about any 6.5 speaker I've listened to but at 89db sensitivity (I think) they do require some power to hit hard. Don't think your current amps would cut it, but you could try and always swap them out after words if it's not quite there.

The other side to this is that even if you add a sub or 6X9's in your bag, you won't hear any of that bass while riding. Hell even if you add some 5X7's or 6X9's that produce a ton of bass you will barely hear it (the bass) while riding.

yes cutting the bags is a leap of faith, but you could ways drill holes and make a "grill" versus an entire 8 inch cut out. I think with the right speaker and amp combo you can get some pretty good bass from fairing speakers and lids, not a ton of hard thumping --- but a nice warm hum.
