Default stock 8ohm speakers

I have a 2002 Ultra with the stock radio and speakers. A numbers of threads talk about the stock speakers being 2 ohms and not being able to replace them with aftermarket speakers and still use the OE head unit.
When I took my outer fairing off I saw that my stock speakers are 8 ohm. I can't afford to upgrade the stereo right now and saving for the handlebar upgrade takes precedence but would like to make it sound a little better anyway. Can I stick some different aftermarket 5 1/4" speakers in the fairing to get me by? Would it even make a difference?

Thanks!

Hawk66, unfortunately you're left with not many options on this old of a head unit sir.

OPTIONS:
  • you will need to stick with 8 ohm speakers in order not to cause any issues with your head unit. J&M is one to look at.
  • change out the stock head unit to a newer model from a 06 and up bike and then replace speakers with 2 or 4 ohm speakers
  • add an amp and then you can pretty much put whatever speakers you like in there

Guess I figured aftermarket speakers would be at least 8 ohm to begin with. Thought about changing to a later model head unit so I didn't lose intercom function but still issues with cost involved at this time. If I added a amp I would just go with changing the head unit. Thanks for the info!

you could always type in "8 ohm 5.25 car speakers" without the brackets in google and you'll get a plethora of decent speakers.
