Slash down bounces more of the sound off the road surface. Also, if you ride on dirt or dusty roads, it will kick up the dust a lot more.
Back when we went to a lot of rallies every year, it was irritating to be near a bike with slash down, they really kicked up a cloud of dust where ever they went.
I did not want to be "that guy", so always mounted mine slash up.
