Default 2024 Road Glide: Dealer Markup

I'm considering trading in my 2021 Police Electra Glide for a 2024 Road Glide, having heard great things about the new bikes. So yesterday I went into my local Harley-Davidson dealership to have a look at their inventory.

Plenty of 2024 Road Glides in stock, but every one of them was marked up nearly 14 percent over MSRP. They called it a "market adjustment". The dealership also wants to charge $999 for HD Theft Protection. Is that a legitimate upcharge? I thought security systems were standard on these bikes.

Would you pay more than MSRP for a new Road Glide?

The dealer has $3K between invoice and MSRP.

I just bought a 24 Fat Boy in Lakeland Florida and got $3K off MSRP. There were similar discounts on the glides.

I would avoid the San Jose dealer. I rode 90 miles to get my deal and it was worth it. I did all my negotiating via email.

My local dealer is a rip off artist.

Wow, it would be cheaper to buy from San Diego and have it shipped, or make a road trip. I get a good chunk knocked off MSRP and no markups. I just bought a 24 RG

Harley lists the MSRP prices and options on the their web site for the model and options you are listed in. That is MSRP. Your state probably requires title, license, and sales tax. That is the upper limit of what you should be paying.
The means, do not pay “local market adjustment”.. do not pay ‘security etching”.. etc. Most dealers are getting more inventory than they can sell now. Take advantage of that.

San Jose Harley is my "local" stealer. I drove my F250 7.3L battle wagon down to Huntington Beach to get $4,995 under MSRP and no fees. Avoid SJHD like the plague. Try House of Thunder in Morgan Hill. Wheels in sales seemed like a nice chap but I have not bought a bike from them. They did offer me a steal on a left over 23.5 while I was kicking tires in March.

FWIW: Years ago I ordered, and put a $1,000 deposit on, a new Deuce from SJHD, it came in on a Friday. They called me at 5pm and said if I did not come in by Monday to pay for it they would give it to the next guy on the list the very next Monday. I had cash to I picked it up, but WTF customer service is that. ymmv

Definitely shop around. I picked up a 24 out the door for 26900 in white with black trim. That includes 6% tax and title.

The deals are out there but it took several dealers to find it.

Imagine having market adjustments when most dealers are just happy to get the damn things out the door. Seriously dealers in my area seemed to be swamped with 24s.... let alone the 23s that likely will never sell.

At least give them credit for being honest and stupid.

Agreed. Paying dealer markup for anything, including motorcycles, is against my religion, too!

Has anyone put together a list of the Harley dealers in California that are scrupulous and never charge additional dealer markup? Here are two that I've found so far:
  • Biggs Harley-Davidson (San Diego)
  • Laidlaw Harley-Davidson (Los Angeles)-lists transparent pricing on all bikes
