Besides my wife would never let me get a Road Glide, she hates the way they look.
Pfffft, my wife hates the look of the road glide but I said, Listen here woman, Im getting what I want .then I woke up, grabbed my ***** that she keeps in the pickle jar and only lets me have them once in a while .
I bought my Road Glide new in 2005. I went to the dealership to buy an Electra Glide Standard, back then lots of incentives to buy Road Glides, they were not moving. 2006 model bikes were coming out the next week, I got a sweet heart deal on a new 2005 in black. Starting price was only about $500 more than the Standard, and that includes cruise, radio and chrome. Then they offered a significant discount on a 95" kit, installation on them. Finally I got them to throw in a sissy bar for the wife. That took some cash and threats of walking, but made it happen. Real good out the door price for what she was.
Get the bike home, took a long time to get used to the look. I would tell everyone she was gorgeous form behind the fairing at 80 mph. One of the best improvements for the look was getting rid of the headlight bubble when they came out with the black trim piece on the CVO bike. I had a good friend at the parts counter that got me one using someone else's VIN #. Then we got into a minor accident which held to a complete make over, new paint, wheels, apes etc. 19 years later, she has over 87k miles on the clock and she still runs great, our go to bike for touring. These days i like the look, especially with apes and no sissy bar.
Keep in mind in 2005 there were not a lot of them on the road, definitely different back then. 2006 also had the Street Glide released, immediately they were everywhere. We talked about this on another thread, HD version of a stripped down bagger starts in 2004 with the new Road Glide and the Road King Custom. They removed all the trim, rails, bars gee gaws etc that the Ultra crowd loved. That morphed into the 2006 Street Glide and here we are today.
New RG is just ergonomically superior in stock form. For me it's the bars above all else. I do like the look of the SG better but the RG has grown n me.
Red headed step child? No way. That’s the road king. Road king was around, was the go-to touring bike. Then the batwing came and took over. Then it has been the go-to. The road glide came to be and it’s not achieved the same level of sales as the batwing. It definitely has stepped up and is giving the batwing a run for its money, but no way has the batwing become a red headed step child. That would imply that no one wants it.
Red headed stepchild would imply it's not getting any attention. The Street Glide got a lot of attention from the MOCO in 2024, just like it's sibling the Road Glide.
