Default Primary capacity 18 Deluxe

The primary capacity is a little confusing to me. From page 122 of the owners manual.

Wide dry fill 46 ounces
Wide wet fill 42 ounces

Narrow dry fill 40 ounces
Narrow wet fill 36 ounce

So my questions :

1 . Do I have a wide or narrow primary on my 18 Deluxe ?
2. What do "they" mean by Dry or Wet fill ?
3. Which models have the wide and which the narrow ?

Tks -- gonna look at the shop manual in a few .. see if there are differences or a better explanation

The wide primary existed on all 2018 softails with the exception of the Sport Glide, which had the narrow primary.

Wet or dry fill is as follows, as long as the primary cover (not the derby cover, but the main cover) isn't removed, it's a wet fill. If the primary cover is removed or its been disassembled further, it's a dry fill.

There seems to be a lot of confusion on this. How do you know for sure?

Fill to the level shown in the service manual. That's when you know it's correct.

Forget about wide and narrow, forget about how many ounces wet or dry...

With the bike straight up, fill the primary until the level is correct, record how many ounces it takes and write it on the wall behind your tool box.

This level is correct for all big twins with a wet clutch (mid `84 and later).

The service manual says the same thing.

It does show the pic Dan89 listed. But still .. I use a measuring cup to get the exact capacity .. well .. where possible anyway.
Long story short, I do this because of the fill problems I had with my Ultra. Ill spare the details.

Bring the fluid level the the bottom of the clutch basket. No need to really measure things out.

Just fill the thing until it gets to the proper level, then you will know the exact amount it holds, this is simple stuff...

Done

I put 36oz wet in my 18 Heritage and that is exactly where the level is at. I guess that means it has the narrow, which is what I was told by the dealer. I believe the Deluxe has the same cover as the Heritage only chrome.

I would like to know where mongomark is getting his info.
